MKi Mapping System

 
Wecome to the Mapping System on the MKi Observatory.

Map of Milton KeynesThe mapping system enables users to view geographic data such as planning constraints, location of facilities, housing proposals, Ordnance survey base maps, aerial photography and much more. The mapping system has a number of tools enabling the user to interact with the map.

This page outlines how to use these tools and outlines some of the main maps available on this site. Should you require any more information on the mapping system please contact us. Please select from one of the options below:

Maps Available:

Arrow Aerial Photography 2009 - This map shows aerial photography for the whole of Milton Keynes taken in 2009. Using the base map picker users can switch between 2007, 2005 and 1999 aerial photography.

Arrow Basic Milton Keynes Map - This geoset simply shows the various boundaries in Milton Keynes, including Wards and Parishes. Use this map if you just want a simple map of Milton Keynes to view. You can also zoom into specific addresses using the address search.

Arrow Collections of Planning Constraints - Each one of these geosets contains a full listing of all of the planning constraint datasets available, but only displays the datasets related to this theme on the map. Using the Layer Manager tool you may turn on or off any of the planning constraints datasets making your view fully customisable.

Arrow Individual Planning Constraints - These geosets are identical to those described above but display each dataset on the map individually.

Arrow Location of Facilities - These geosets each contain a full listing of all of the location of facilities datasets available. They have been grouped together for ease of use under broad use categories. Using the Layer Manager tool you may turn on or off any of the location of facility datasets making your view fully customisable.

Arrow Location and Use of Non-Residential Properties - The Non Residential Use database shows the location and use of buildings. This database although reviewed regularly is in constant change any user finding and inaccuracies or errors should notify them to webmaster@mkiobservatory.org.uk

Arrow Housing Proposals - The Housing database present the development status of all housing proposals included in the Milton Keynes Local Plan that have either a valid planning permission or are zoned for housing development. Information is available for sites greater than 5 dwellings.

Arrow City Development Atlas - Concentrating on Milton Keynes New Town, the atlas provides summary details of developer, decade and architect for a large number of residential and commercial estates constructed between 1950 & 2005. The information is based on records held within Milton Keynes Council Planning Department and publications on the city and its buildings. Although every care was taken with the production of the polygons and the estate data it is essential that users check the quoted sources to ensure accuracy.

Arrow Linear Parks - Shows themes to which policy applies or which may be a material consideration in the determination of a planning application.

Arrow MKPC - Full Planning Powers - Shows themes to which policy applies or which may be a material consideration in the determination of a planning application.

Please read the information below which will explain the mapping tools available.

To begin using the mapping system simply choose a mapping theme from our list of mapping themes. This will open up a Planweb window and present you with the information you requested together with the following tools:

Mapping tool - zoom map inZoom in tool - click or click hold and drag to draw a rectangle, then let go to view.

Mapping tool - zoom map outClick once. Each click once redrawn will zoom you out to twice the extents.

Mapping tool - pan mapThe pan tool allows you to click and drag the map in any direction. 

Mapping tool - line rulerThis tool allows you to measure distance. Click once to start measurement, twice to end measurement. The results are shown in the bar at the bottom of the screen - total length and actual segment distance in metres.

Mapping tool - area rulerThis tool allows you to measure area click to start polygon, continue clicking around an area, double click to finish. The area of the drawn polygon is shown in the bottom screen - Area in m2. Click on the white box in the cell to view area in acres, hectares etc.

Mapping tool - point infoSelecting this tool allow you to gain information about the mapped data. Click once in the area required and a pop up window will present information about all layers beneath the point selected.

Mapping tool - fitShould the map fail to fit the whole window selecting this tool will refresh the view.

Mapping tool - copyThis tool allows you to copy the map view to the clipboard for use in other products such as MS Word etc.

In addition to the map tools you can also access a further set of tools by clicking on the grey Overview Map header in the right hand navigation area, this opens a further selection of tools that will allow you to do the following:

  • Search for an address in Milton Keynes
  • Change the base mapping - including turning on Aerial Photography
  • Select and Add further layers of information
  • Turn on an Overview Map
  • Produce Scale Printing

Once a theme is opened you will be presented with an overview map of Milton Keynes with that theme displayed. The map window is designed to show greater/lower level base map details as the user zooms in or out using the zoom tools, this is called zoom layering. Ordnance survey Landline data will appear when the zoom level reaches 1500m. Users of the system may turn on more base maps of their choice by using the Base Map Picker tool.

Restrictions on Use
  1. Software- The mapping system is designed to operate on Internet Explorer 5.5 and above.
  2. Licence Restrictions- All base mapping is subject to Crown copyright and should only be used by the Licence holder in connection with their business for research, private study, criticism or review; it must not be used for commercial research of monetary gain. The MKi Observatory has provided watermarking and the Councils licence number on all Ordnance Survey material and any reproduction, by the licence holder or third parties, will comply and contain the following Ordnance Survey acknowledgement. This map is reproduced from Ordnance Survey material with the permission of Ordnance Survey on behalf of the Controller of Her Majesty's Stationery Office ©Crown copyright.
